It seems that an article was published in Die Burger suggesting that Helderberg Photographic Society are hosting a photographic workship in the Overberg in late October but this is incorrect. Although JJ van Heerden and Wicus Leeuwner are members of our club they host these workshops independently.

At least 50 people turned up for our first meeting of the year … it was great to see old friends, and to meet new ones! Several folk have applied and paid for membership – we welcome you all and hope you will enjoy being part of this vibrant group of photographers! Susan and Harry are back here again from France, and Nicole is back after her ‘Artist in Residence’ sojourn in Paris. Bernard, as our new Chairman, started off with a number of notices, and Paddy and Irmel informed us of projected plans for outings and audio-visual workshops. A number of prints came up for Evaluation – Nicole and Ken Woods doing the honours. There were many digital images submitted -the quality of work was excellent, and we hope to see this standard following through into this new year. Members seem to be experimenting more and gaining good results – keep it up!

After tea Steve Crane gave a short talk on two aspects of Photoshop – changing digital images into Black and White; and changing a particular part of a B&W image into colour. Links to these techniques can be found here.

Details of the outings on 23rd January (US ‘Jool’) and 30th January (Full Moon) will be sent to members by e-mail.

Next month’s set subject is ‘Candy/Sweets’ – give it a try – you’ll be amazed at how creative you can be!

14^th Nov 2009 – Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Newlands

National Geographic and Getaway bring you Discover Digital, a one day photography workshop

which will not only leave you inspired but will teach you the necessary skills and knowledge

required to take that perfect picture!

The workshops have something for everyone whether you are a beginner or someone with

a little more experience.

Dave Rogers, who will be presenting the course, is a good friend of Getaway. Prior to setting up his own business in 2000, David spent seven years as assistant editor at Getaway magazine writing and photographing more than 100 features including 20 cover stories for which he won several awards.
Dave is adding a practical element to the course, which we are very excited about!

Teaching Through Photography

I was recently contacted by Ellen Rosenberg who runs CHOSA, a small NGO based out of Cape Town that provides support for children’s homes, creches and outreach projects for orphans and vulnerable children. They work with communities to provide support, primarily in Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Mfuleni, Delft, etc.

Since 2006, they have been running photography workshops with the youth in their after-school program. They use point-and-shoot 35mm cameras and teach everything from “which way to hold the camera” to composition, lighting, subject and more. These workshops have been featured on NPR’s The Picture Show. Ellen says

The kids LOVE the workshops we run and are consistently improving their technique and developing their own styles behind the lens.

We are constantly searching for talented local South African photographers who are willing to lead a workshop or series of workshops for our budding young photographers.

I hoped that some of our club members and other readers might be able to offer their assistance with these workshops. If you can help, send Ellen an e-mail.
