“Expose to the right” is an expression that you may have heard before, but my experience has been that most folks don’t understand what it means or how how to do it.

Craig Hickman’s Virtual Camera is an online application, or web site, that presents a camera whose settings you can control. As you change the settings the image on the simulated LCD changes, showing you how the setting changes affect the image. You can choose auto, program, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes as you would on your camera. The site behaves just as your camera would, allowing you to change the either the aperture, shutter speed or ISO depending on the mode you chose. You can also change the exposure value (EV). This is a great way to learn how all these settings interact to affect the image.

‘Less is more’, or so the saying goes. But in this case, I guess its true; less effort and less time equals more productivity and and better results, what more could one ask for? So from where I’m standing, Exposure Fusion looks to have everything going for it, and then some.

Competition Meeting Wed. 11th Feb.’09

More than 50 members and guests arrived for our Competition Meeting, the set subject being ‘Energy’. After welcoming everyone, Nettie called on Marius Swart, and Pieter van der Westhuizen, who ‘Got their Feet Wet’ – each showing 5 favourite images. We look forward to seeing more of their work in competition and evaluation.

Paddy spoke about the Gansbaai/De Kelders outing on the weekend of 20 – 22^nd March, and Irmel explained the audio visual program. Should you wish to go on the Gansbaai outing – even if it is only for Saturday when you will need to be at the De Kelders gate at 4pm – please call Paddy on 021 876 2136 as soon as possible.

The competition subject was a challenge! JJ mentioned that it was one of his toughest judging exercises, and he is thanked for his effort and input. The Open section was once again well subscribed, displaying a wide range of subjects. Steve will put up the results on this website.

After tea, JJ gave a technical talk on histograms and exposure. Members had been invited to bring along their cameras, and a practical session followed which was quite illuminating to some (eg. Me!) Thanks, JJ!

All in all it was a good meeting at which we welcomed a number of new members, explored creativity, and gained technical knowledge.

Looking ahead to …

Our next meeting takes place on Wednesday 11^th March at the Somerset West Library Hall, at 7.30pm. It is a ‘Competition’ meeting and the Set Subject is ‘Energy’. I have been wracking my brains as to how I am going to interpret ‘energy’ … it’s quite difficult (for me) … and it’s going to involve me actively going out to make images – First Prize? – a dark and stormy night with lots of lightning! I guess photographing a static windmill, or a row of unlit light bulbs won’t exactly work … so I will have to do a little left-brain thinking, and try my best. If you are also thinking along these lines (!) remember we only have three weeks left! Of course, prints, slides and digital images may be entered in the Set Subject and Open Sections (a total of 8 – if desired) … check the ‘How To’ tab in the toolbar above.

Our judge for the evening will be JJ van Heerden – our Technical Adviser on the HPS Committee (he who sponsors our prize vouchers … J).

Two new members are going to ‘Get their Feet Wet’ – Pieter van der Westhuizen and Marius Swart. (five images each).

After tea, JJ will be giving a talk, with images, on Histograms, Exposure and File Formats (JPEG vs TIFF vs RAW). Please bring your Cameras! We are going to have a practical session so that you can work the buttons on the back of your camera. Naturally we have members who may know about all of this already, but we have members who are fairly new to photography and who would appreciate learning from an expert, without stress! Our experienced photographers could perhaps sit alongside ‘newbies’ and be of help to them.

OK, so let’s activate those brain cells – find examples on Flickr by searching tags, Google it , think about it! Let’s see the results! Good luck!
