Flickr changed my life. True story.

I am a relatively new Flickr convert and a full fledged Flickr evangelist and my number one message to the masses: Flickr isn’t a dumping ground for ‘pics’. It isn’t a graveyard where millions of images are laid to rest never to be seen again. It is a community where photographers share their latest conquests and view beautiful works by other artists. Of course, there are probably millions of users who merely dump and run but I think Flickr has done something rather clever to prevent too many non-users: they charge a minor yearly fee for accounts who want to upload more than a certain number of images. This might turn off a huge percentage of users who just want a free method of generating a url for their photos to put on Ebay but I think it just weeds out those who don’t intend on doing much with their subscription in the first place.

How Flickr Can Make you a Better Photographer

If you’re not using Flickr yet, then you’re really missing out. Not only is it a great way to store and share your photos, but it’s also an excellent place to get feedback and learn from other photographers.

When I first joined Flickr, I merely saw it as a way to store my photos and serve as yet another backup source, but after using the site for a few months, I became addicted, and quickly realized how the site could make me a better photographer.

When you send me a request for an invitation to our Flickr group, please make sure that you have made me a contact first. Flickr has a mechanism in place to prevent spamming through the group system by only allowing me to invite people that have me as a contact. Although I can also invite you via your e-mail address this is problematic as people sometimes use different e-mail addresses and if the address doesn’t match the one used to open your Flickr account you might still not be able to join the group, even after being invited.

50 amazing Flickr streams by Photocritic

Beyond the stuff I’ve been posting in my twitter stream, I haven’t really had much time to post proper blog posts here on this blog recently – and my apologies about that. What I have been doing, however, is browsing Flickr to get some amazing inspiration, ideas, and tips for the whats and hows of photography. Throughout the past few weeks, I’ve been keeping bookmarks of my best finds.

I’ve found a whole load of amazing photographers who have made me smile, filled me with wonder, made me shy with inadequacy, and proud to be part of this whole ‘photography’ thing. My only shame in all of this is that there are many more than 50 good – nay, great – photographers out there – so I would very much like to encourage you to post a comment with your favourite Flickr streams…

Our Flickr Group

I just wanted to remind everyone that the club has a private Flickr group that all members are welcome to join. You can use this group to share your photos with other members, without worrying that other Flickr users can see them or be able to steal them. You can also use the group to start and join discussions with other members on any topics you wish. Again, these discussions remain private and can not be seen by general Flickr users.

So if you have a Flickr account, send me a Flickrmail telling me you want to join; and if you don’t have a Flickr account yet. WHY NOT? Flickr is great fun.
