The annual Western Cape Interclub Photographic Competition will be taking place on Saturday 31st October, 2009, from 6pm, at the Endler Hall, Conservatoire, University of Stellenbosch in Stellenbosch.  Photographic clubs from the region will be displaying their best prints and digital images during the course of the evening.  Drinks and snacks will be served between 6pm and 7.30pm, when the digital show starts in the auditorium.  Tickets are R50 per person (drinks and snacks included), and can be booked via e-mail from nettie28@iafrica.com.  You are very welcome to attend!

Starting the year on a high note the Drakenstein Coon Carnival fills the town with colour, sound and motion. Wellington is the only town besides Cape Town that has organized Coon groups to perform at New Year’s festivities since the early eighties.

Classic Car and Bike Show 2009

Saturday 24 January – Modern Classics
On day one of the Show, the exhibition will consist of vehicles which can be defined as ‘Modern Classics”. These include Hot Rods, Street Rods, souped up vehicles, racing cars and bikes, custom vehicles and motorcycles and of course, a few new cars and bikes! This is a day that will appeal to many motoring enthusiasts, but it is important to note that there will be no old or Classic vehicles on display.

Sunday 25 January – Classics
On day two of the Show, the exhibition will consist of vehicles dating from as far back as the late 1890’s, to more recent times. These are the classics that invoke an era of elegance, a more relaxed way of life and a time when craftsmanship was an important element of vehicle design and manufacture. This is always a popular display and will appeal to anyone with a love of restored and maintained classic vehicles.

Oude Libertas – Market

Every Saturday, our very popular market takes place on the lawn in front of the thatched roofed Mon Repos under the huge shady trees – some, centuries old (extending onto the bricked courtyard). The market offers a wide variety of products for you to purchase for yourself as well as offering a wide choice of gifts for friends and family. Jewellery, paintings, organic fruit and veggies, indigenous crafted items (where you can chat with the maker!), furniture, biltong and droëwors, fresh oysters, pure honey, freshly-baked breads, plants and clothing items are just a few of the items currently for sale. Sometimes we also offer wine tasting!

Our kitchen has a variety of sumptious breakfasts available, with the Farmhouse and Omelettes taking a definate lead.

The Saturday Market at Oude Libertas is expanding each and every week and is well worth visiting.

Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market

The Stellenbosch Fresh Goods market is an authentic Slow Food market consisting of producers selling products they have sourced, grown, raised, harvested, caught, preserved or transformed themselves. The market place is located on the Dorpstreet square in Bosman’s Crossing trading village in Stellenbosch and is open every Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

This is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa – and beautifully maintained. The gardens include three glass houses (tropical-, succulent- and karoo houses), the lotus lily pond, water lily pond, Japanese garden, herb garden and arboretum. There is also the BioBou Garden Gift Shop (only indigenous, plant-based, organic and eco-friendly products). The garden is open 8-5, seven days a week, closed only on certain public holidays.  Call 021 808 3054 for information on how many lotuses are in bloom.

The earlier you go the better, for photographing bright flowers in full sun is not the easiest of tasks (at about 10.00 the sun shines on most of the lilies). Be sure to take sunscreen and a hat! Apart from these supermodel lilies, you will also find insects galore to photograph, so don’t leave your long lens at home: dragonflies, spiders, nectar-seeking goggos..

The Katjiepiering Tea Garden in the dense shade of the huge oaks could provide whatever sustenance you need during your stay.

If you don’t want to travel so far, and live in Cape Town, you will find sacred lotuses in the bottom-most pond of Wynberg Park, but these lotuses are not as accessible as the ones in Stellenbosch.  It is a natural, wild pond, not a brick built pond with lilies hanging over its sides. The choice is yours.

Visit to the Rupert Museum « craniac’s place

1. The PHOTO COURSE at Rhenish Girls High School consists of 7 lessons in the class room and 1 field trip. IDEAL FOR TOTAL BEGINNERS. Next course runs from 5 to 26 February 2009.
2. The DIGITAL DAY for beginners is a ‘one day’ workshop introducing you to the first steps in PHOTOSHOP, an image editing software programme used to touch up images on the computer.
3. The CREATIVE DIGITAL Workshop day is an ideal follow up where you will learn more advanced techniques.
4. The MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY week end workshop teaches specialized techniques for taking extreme close-ups and requires specific equipment such as an SLR camera with a dedicated Macro lens or extension tubes. THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS.
5. The AUTUMN in the VINEYARDS weekend workshop concentrates on landscape photography. The photography side is not as technically detailed as in the Photo Course, and Photoshop work covers just the essential first steps to prepare your photographs for the analysis (critique) happening during the weekend. THIS IS A GOOD FIRST WORKSHOP.
6. A 7 day, 6 night WORKSHOP is presented in spring at the end of September or beginning of October.  This workshop teaches landscape photography, close-up photography and light painting amongst others. A WONDERFUL WORKSHOP FOR EVERYONE, beginners and advanced photographers alike. Due to unforeseen circumstance, this workshop can no longer be held at the usual venue and an alternative venue is being investigated. Details will be published as soon as arrangements are in place.
7. Eric and Nicole are also planning a new weekend workshop, ideal for all levels of photographic competence. They will publish information about it on their web site as soon as details are confirmed.
