The Art and Significance of Judging in Club Photography

Judging stands as one of the most crucial and often contentious elements within club photography. On one side, the club serves as a haven for socializing around photography as a beloved hobby. On the other, it aims to aid members in advancing their photographic prowess by acquiring technical knowledge and honing their artistic vision. But how can one truly ascertain their progress?

This is where the act of judging plays an invaluable role, providing an external, honest, and ideally objective perspective on one’s work. Judging oneself is an inherently flawed endeavor, akin to trying to discern the color of one’s own eyes without the aid of a mirror.

We all aspire to excel in our photography, yet we find ourselves at varying stages and embarking on unique journeys. Some may concentrate on the technical aspects, striving to understand their camera’s capabilities and limitations, while others might immerse themselves in the artistic realm, less concerned with technicalities.

For some, the allure lies in the narrative each photograph conveys, while others seek to immortalize fleeting moments in time. Some push the boundaries of technical possibility, while others strive to redefine the essence of art.

Though we may each have a preferred genre or style, the boundless potential for learning and experimentation ensures that photography remains a lifelong voyage of discovery.

Embracing critique is the initial step in a continuous shaping process, guiding you towards your aspirations. Just as diamonds form under pressure, constructive criticism serves as a crucible for growth. While no one relishes being under pressure—an experience that feels unnatural and uncomfortable—the reason for enduring it becomes clear: to become a diamond in the realm of photography. As a master photographer, you will distinguish yourself with outstanding, unique work. When your distinctive style gains recognition within your club and beyond, you’ll know you’re on the right path, even if it’s a solitary one.

Ultimately, the focus doesn’t matter as long as you’re enjoying the journey!

You may not be able to learn how to be judged, but you can be taught the art of judging. Being judged is a deeply personal and emotional experience that can sometimes provoke strong reactions. However, separating emotions from the feedback received will inevitably benefit your photography. It will either reinforce your vision or help you refine it. Listening attentively to critique will broaden your understanding and vocabulary around photography, enabling you to help others see through your eyes.
